Assumptions

For liquid products, product pounds are converted to approximate gallons using 8.34 pounds per gallon.
The calculator handles immediate chlorine additions. Slow-dissolving tablets are not a fast ppm correction.
If current free chlorine is already above target, the dose is zero and retesting is the next step.

How it works

Use the ppm raise, not just pool size.

Chlorine dose depends on how far your current free chlorine reading is below the target. A 15,000 gallon pool going from 1 ppm to 5 ppm needs a 4 ppm raise; the same pool going from 3 ppm to 5 ppm needs half as much.

Can I use household bleach in a pool chlorine calculator?

Only use plain, unscented bleach without splashless additives, fragrances, thickeners, or cleaners. Enter the actual sodium hypochlorite percentage from the label.

What if current free chlorine is already above the target?

Do not add more chlorine for that target. Keep the pump running, avoid extra dosing, and retest until free chlorine returns to the appropriate range.

Does CYA change how much chlorine I need?

CYA does not change the ppm dose formula, but it changes the target free chlorine range many pool owners use. Higher CYA often requires a higher free chlorine target.

Why does old liquid chlorine dose differently?

Liquid chlorine loses strength with heat, sunlight, and age. If the jug is old or stored hot, the label percentage may overstate real strength, so dose conservatively and retest.

Can I swim after adding chlorine?

Circulate and retest first. Swim only when free chlorine and pH are within the safe range recommended by your test kit, product label, and pool guidance.
