Pool chlorine calculator

How much chlorine should you add?

Enter pool gallons, current free chlorine, target free chlorine, and product strength. The calculator estimates liquid chlorine gallons, bleach gallons, or cal-hypo pounds for a measured ppm raise.

Select a product strength to see what else the product may add.

Dose cautiously: add the first-dose amount, circulate, and retest before adding the remainder. Never mix chlorine products.

Shock dose

Next step

After chlorine, confirm pH and stabilizer.

Free chlorine targets depend on pool context. Check pH before swimming, and use CYA if stabilizer is part of the decision.

Formula and review notes

Pool chlorine calculation method

Last updated July 2, 2026. This calculator is an estimate for planning pool maintenance, then retesting before making another adjustment.

Formula used Pool gallons x ppm increase x 0.00000834 / product strength = product pounds

Assumptions

  • For liquid products, product pounds are converted to approximate gallons using 8.34 pounds per gallon.
  • The calculator handles immediate chlorine additions. Slow-dissolving tablets are not a fast ppm correction.
  • If current free chlorine is already above target, the dose is zero and retesting is the next step.

Reference checks

How it works

Use the ppm raise, not just pool size.

Chlorine dose depends on how far your current free chlorine reading is below the target. A 15,000 gallon pool going from 1 ppm to 5 ppm needs a 4 ppm raise; the same pool going from 3 ppm to 5 ppm needs half as much.

The long-tail searches Semrush surfaced all point to the same job: how much chlorine, liquid chlorine, bleach, or cal-hypo to add. This page keeps those products in one calculator so the user can switch strength without leaving the workflow.

CYA does not change the weight math for a ppm chlorine increase, but it can change the free chlorine target you choose. If stabilizer is the question, start with the pool CYA calculator.

Chlorine calculator supplies

Use these reminders to check labels, test readings, and supplies before dosing.

Label first
Pool chemicals Liquid chlorine Useful for daily or startup free chlorine adjustments. Check the label percentage and storage date; old liquid chlorine can be weaker than expected.
Testing Free chlorine test kit Needed before and after chlorine dosing. Use a test that can read the range you are targeting, especially after large chlorine additions.

Pool chlorine FAQ

Questions before adding chlorine.

These answers cover the chlorine, liquid chlorine, bleach, startup, and tablet long-tails Semrush surfaced.

How much chlorine should I add to my pool?

Use pool gallons, current free chlorine, target free chlorine, and product strength. The calculator estimates liquid chlorine gallons or granular chlorine pounds for the ppm increase.

How much 10% liquid chlorine raises 10,000 gallons by 1 ppm?

About 0.1 gallon of 10% liquid chlorine raises 10,000 gallons by roughly 1 ppm. One full gallon raises 10,000 gallons by about 10 ppm.

Can I use household bleach in a pool chlorine calculator?

Only use plain, unscented bleach without splashless additives, fragrances, thickeners, or cleaners. Enter the actual sodium hypochlorite percentage from the label.

What if current free chlorine is already above the target?

Do not add more chlorine for that target. Keep the pump running, avoid extra dosing, and retest until free chlorine returns to the appropriate range.

Does CYA change how much chlorine I need?

CYA does not change the ppm dose formula, but it changes the target free chlorine range many pool owners use. Higher CYA often requires a higher free chlorine target.

How much chlorine should I add at pool startup?

Startup dosing depends on gallons, current free chlorine, CYA, water condition, and product label directions. Use a conservative target, circulate, and retest before adding more.

Are chlorine tablets included in this calculator?

This page focuses on immediate chlorine adjustments with liquid chlorine, bleach, or cal-hypo. Tablets dissolve slowly and are better treated as maintenance feed, not a fast ppm correction.

Why does old liquid chlorine dose differently?

Liquid chlorine loses strength with heat, sunlight, and age. If the jug is old or stored hot, the label percentage may overstate real strength, so dose conservatively and retest.

Can I swim after adding chlorine?

Circulate and retest first. Swim only when free chlorine and pH are within the safe range recommended by your test kit, product label, and pool guidance.
